OVERVIEW

This project looks at the branding and clothing designs created for an Australian adventure YouTube channel. The channel focusses mainly on exploring the beautiful north-westerly coastline of Australia, and venturing out to sea to catch a variety of animals. The channel has over 8 million subscribers and 2.8 billion video views on YouTube alone, with millions more across other social platforms.

THE STORY

This case study started as a personal passion project for me as I had watched YBS Youngbloods’ content extensively for years. I therefore felt I had a deep understanding of their style, audience, and brand personality, and believed their existing branding could be enhanced.

I took the initiative to create new branding that captured the true essence of their channel. Without expecting much, I reached out to them with my designs, and to my surprise, they responded enthusiastically and asked to use the branding for their merchandise.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson - not to be afraid of approaching people with my work. While a lot of the time you may face rejection, persistence can lead to brilliant opportunities and clients, even when it feels unlikely.

BRANDING

With the channel rooted in fishing and coastal adventures on a paddleboard, I centred my rebrand approach around these core elements.

To capture the bubbly, fun, and carefree tone of the channel I designed custom type characters, moulding them into shapes that reflect these core elements.

Initially, I experimented with a muted colour palette of blue and beige to represent the ocean and sand. However, this felt too subdued for the energetic personality of Brodie, the main face behind YBS - so I pivoted to a bolder, more playful colour scheme that better matched his dynamic spirit.

Overall the design work was greatly received by the team at YBS Youngbloods. The fish logo mark was used across various pieces of their clothing and proved to be a great success.
